Women’s Health

Seeing as it’s endometriosis awareness month in the world there isn’t a better time to talk about the health issues faced by women from a young age. This post is not about endometriosis but about all the issues that affect women as a result of hormonal imbalances. Please note I am not in any way a medical professional, what I am writing in this post is the research I have done after my own diagnosis, also what has worked for me in managing my condition, if you have any of the symptoms listed here in this post I suggest you see a gynaecologist.

What is Hormonal imbalance?

Hormones are the body’s messengers, they help tissues or organs to do their work via travelling through the bloodstream. Hormonal imbalance occurs when there is an excess of certain hormones. In the female body, the hormones that do the reproductive work are Estrogen, Progesterone and prolactin. Hormonal imbalance usually occurs if there is an excess of estrogen in the body.

Estrogen is the female sex hormone that is released by the ovaries, it is responsible for reproduction, menstruation and menopause. An excess of estrogen can cause growth and tumours in the female body in the form of fibroids and cysts, if left untreated this could also lead to ovarian and breast cancers.

What causes hormonal imbalances?

  1. A diet high in sugar.
  2. Refined carbohydrates- the body turns them into glucose(sugar).
  3. Excess Alcohol
  4. Dairy Products
  5. Stress
  6. Lack of exercise

Symptoms of hormonal imbalance:

  1. Constant Acne breakouts.
  2. Excessive Pain during period.
  3. Breasts that have milk but you are not yet a mother.
  4. Irregular or erratic periods.
  5. Periods that last over 7 days.
  6. Bleeding outside your normal cycle

In our next post we will discuss how to manage these conditions with the help of diet and natural remedies. I advice you to see your gynaecologist first even if you have non of these symptoms for a checkup because cysts can grow inside you for years without any serious symptoms. I hope you found this post helpful! Let me know what other topics you want me to cover on here. Xo
